Procol Harum – Still There’ll Be More: An Anthology 1967-2017 – 5 CD + 3 DVD Esoteric – 23-03-2018
Ecco due uscite interessanti, per quanto entrambe non siano delle primizie assolute a livello di ripubblicazioni. Partiamo da questa dedicata ai Procol Harum, in occasione del loro 50° Anniversario (che comunque sarebbe stato nel 2017, visto che A Whiter Shade Of Pale era uscito nel 1967, ma queste date per le etichette discografiche sono spesso degli optionals): in effetti già nel 2009, senza particolari ricorrenze, era stato pubblicato un box da 3 CD + 1 DVD All This And More…, edito dalla Union Square Music e distribuito dalla Salvo Records, che era già un compendio piuttosto ricco della della loro produzione, con parecchi brani rari ed inediti ed un bel libretto di 72 pagine. In più la band di Gary Brooker è sempre stata servita piuttosto bene a livello di ristampe, visto che i vari album sono più o meno tutti disponibili in edizione rimasterizzate, spesso doppie o triple, con una messe di materiale extra, e di recente l’uscita dell’ultimo album http://discoclub.myblog.it/2017/05/07/il-ritorno-di-uno-dei-gruppi-simbolo-del-pop-anni-sessanta-procol-harum-novum/ ha rinnovato l’interesse per la band inglese, una delle più sottovalutate nel panorama del rock classico anni ’60-’70.
Still There’ll Be More: An Anthology 1967-2017 uscirà il 23 marzo anche in una versione basica “da poveri” in 2 CD, ma ovviamente quella più interessante è questa da 8 dischetti, che dovrebbe costare indicativamente poco meno di 100 euro, con contenuti assai ricchi, soprattutto nella parte video. Non ho controllato in modo molto approfondito, ma parte del materiale “inedito” e raro è comunque già apparso nelle versioni potenziate dei singoli album, comunque chi vuole avere un bel cofanetto del gruppo, arricchito anche da un bel librone rilegato da 68 pagine ricco di foto e notizie, può farci sicuramente un pensierino.
Spirit – It Shall Be: The Ode And Epic Recordings 1968-1972 – 5 CD Esoteric 16-03-2018
La settimana prima, il 16 marzo, sempre la Esoteric pubblica un cofanetto da 5 CD dedicato al periodo d’oro degli Spirit, la band di Randy California, colta nel proprio periodo migliore, quello delle incisioni tra il 1968 (quindi questa volta con i 50 anni ci siamo alla perfezione) e il 1972, in cui il quintetto californiano fu tra i migliori rappresentanti della psichedelia e dell’acid-rock più raffinato, spesso con spunti jazzati forniti dalla batteria di Ed Cassidy e dalle tastiere di John Locke, su cui si innestava la voce di Jay Ferguson e le divagazioni chitarristiche di Randy California, uno dei miglior solisti dell’epoca, che aveva “rischiato” di far parte degli Experience di Jimi Hendrix in una formazione allargata (e di cui è sempre stato uno degli epigoni e degli eredi più validi), ma che in virtù della giovane età si era visto rifiutare dalla madre la possibilità di trasferirsi in Inghilterra per condividere quella avventura con Jimi, ma che poi non possiamo negare abbia fatto assai bene anche in proprio. Anche in questo caso la discografia del gruppo è ben servita da una serie di ristampe, sia da parte della Sony come della Repertoire, anche queste in versione remaster e con parecchie bonus, e di recente alcuni album sono usciti pure in versione SACD per gli audiofili. Ottimo anche il doppio antologico Time Circle 1968-1972, che copre lo stesso periodo di questo cofanetto, e tratta del materiale pubblicato ai tempi dalla Ode e dalla Epic Records, oltre a riportare parecchio materiale inedito ripreso anche in Shall Be: The Ode And Epic Recordings 1968-1972.
Nel nuovo cofanetto, di prossima uscita, tra le rarità troviamo anche la colonna sonora di un film Model Shop, registrata nel 1968, e pubblicata in CD dalla Sundazed solo nel 2005, oltre a vari singoli, outtakes, versioni mono e altre chicche della produzione del gruppo.

Nel caso specifico il prezzo previsto, sempre a livello molto indicativo, dovrebbe essere molto interessante, diciamo tra i 35 e i 40 euro, mentre la confezione sarà più spartana di quella dei Procol Harum, per quanto sempre con un libretto inserito nella confezione con un saggio sulla storia del gruppo e interviste con Randy California e Ed Cassidy, che purtroppo non ci sono più. Se non avete nulla, ma anche se avete quasi tutto, un documento molto importante su uno dei gruppi più sfavillanti della storia del rock.
