The Long Ryders – Psychedelic Country Soul – Omnivore CD
I Long Ryders negli anni ottanta sono stati con i Dream Syndicate ed i Green On Red uno dei gruppi cardine di quel movimento nato a Los Angeles e denominatoPaisley Underground, ma nello stesso tempo, soprattutto per le loro influenze che andavano dai Byrds ai Flying Burrito Brothers, si potrebbero considerare tra i capostipiti del futuro revival Americana ed alternative country. I tre album pubblicati durante il loro periodo di attività (1983-1987), Native Sons, State Of Our Union e Two-Fisted Tales, sono considerati dagli estimatori tra i dischi di maggior culto della decade, ma il fatto che vendettero pochissimo contribuì allo scioglimento prematuro del quartetto (Sid Griffin, Stephen McCarthy, Tom Stevens e Greg Sowders), nonostante esibizioni dal vivo che definire infuocate è dir poco (il secondo ed il terzo lavoro sono usciti pochi mesi fa in edizioni triple deluxe, ma se del gruppo non avete nulla è sufficiente il bellissimo box quadruplo del 2016 Final Wild Songs). Nelle decadi successive Griffin, da sempre il leader dei Ryders, ha pubblicato diversi album sia da solo che con i Coal Porters (oltre a scrivere libri su Gram Parsons e Bob Dylan), e dal 2004 ha iniziato a riunire saltuariamente il suo vecchio gruppo per brevi tour (ed un album dal vivo, State Of Our Reunion), ma pochi avrebbero pensato che i nostri avrebbero dato alle stampe un lavoro nuovo di zecca, e men che meno della qualità di Psychedelic Country Soul.
E invece Sid e compagni (ancora nella loro formazione originale) sono riusciti seppur tardivamente nel miracolo, cioè di consegnarci un disco davvero bellissimo, pieno di canzoni originali (ed una cover) suonate e cantate con la grinta degli esordi, una miscela vincente di country e rock’n’roll che fa sembrare l’album come un disco perduto inciso subito dopo Two-Fisted Tales. Anzi, forse è perfino meglio, in quanto i nostri hanno acquisito maggior esperienza e hanno perso qualche ingenuità inevitabile quando si è giovani: per questo Psychedelic Country Soul (bello anche il titolo) è a mio parere uno dei migliori album di Americana usciti negli ultimi tempi, e vista la già avvenuta reunion dei Dream Syndycate (che tra l’altro hanno un disco in uscita a Maggio) per ricostituire il Paisley Underground mancherebbero solo i Green On Red, se solo Dan Stuart riuscisse a tornare a concentrarsi sulla musica. L’album è prodotto da Ed Stasium, definito dai nostri il quinto Long Ryder, e vede alcune collaborazioni illustri come la violinista Kerenza Peacock, già con i Coal Porters, e le voci di Debbi e Vicky Peterson, ex Bangles. La maggior parte dei brani è a firma di Griffin, ma anche McCarthy e Stevens dicono la loro, pure come cantanti solisti.
Si inizia alla grande con la scintillante Greenville, un brano country-rock terso e limpido con chitarre in gran spolvero e ritmo sostenuto, suono byrdsiano ed ottimo refrain: bentornati. Let It Fly è una deliziosa country ballad suonata sempre con piglio da rock band, begli stacchi chitarristici, interventi di steel e violino ed armonie vocali celestiali; la spedita Molly Somebody è folk-rock deluxe dal ritmo alto, melodia che prende al primo ascolto e gran lavoro di chitarra, un brano che potrebbe benissimo provenire dal repertorio di Tom Petty, mentre All Aboard è una splendida e goduriosa rock’n’roll song, solite chitarre in tiro (strepitoso l’assolo centrale) ed uno sviluppo trascinante: siamo solo ad un terzo del disco e già abbiamo quattro canzoni una più bella dell’altra. Anche Gonna Make It Real è decisamente bella, un country-rock puro e cristallino, dal motivo solare ed ancora con un uso sopraffino delle voci; If You Want To See Me Cry, lenta ed acustica, è un gradito momento di relax, ma con What The Eagle Sees riprende alla grande il tour de force elettrico, un rock’n’roll suonato con grinta da punk band, quasi come se i nostri fossero in un club nei primi anni ottanta: gran ritmo e, tanto per cambiare, una festa di chitarre.
California State Line è una deliziosa e malinconica country ballad, nella quale è chiara l’influenza di Parsons; The Sound è un pezzo rock fluido e grintoso, dal tempo accelerato e con la solita linea melodica tersa e godibile. Walls, unica cover del CD, è un bel brano proprio di Tom Petty, non molto conosciuto (era sulla colonna sonora di She’s The One), ma perfetto per l’attitudine folk-rock dei nostri: rilettura rispettosa e decisamente riuscita, grazie anche alle voci delle due ex Bangles. Il dischetto termina con la tenue Bells Of August, squisita e rilassata ballata elettroacustica scritta e cantata da Stevens (e qui sento echi di The Band), e con l’elettrica e potente title track, che conferma quanto annuncia nel titolo, specie per la parte “psychedelic”, come da vibrante coda chitarristica del pezzo. E’ chiaro che la carriera dei Long Ryders negli anni ottanta è stato un caso lampante di “unfinished business”, ma ora vorrei sperare che questo bellissimo album sia un nuovo inizio e non la parola finale alla loro storia.
The Long Ryders – Final Wild Songs – Cherry Red 4CD Box Set
Tra le migliori band nate in America negli anni ottanta una delle più dimenticate, anche per il relativamente scarso successo di vendite avuto nel periodo di attività, sono certamente i Long Ryders, gruppo di Los Angeles formato nel 1983 da Sid Griffin e generalmente associato al movimento Paisley Underground, che aveva come artisti di punta i Dream Syndicate ed i Green On Red. Personalmente io colloco la band di Griffin all’interno di quel movimento più che altro per la loro attitudine garage e post-punk (soprattutto dal vivo), ma dal punto di vista del suono ho sempre giudicato i Long Ryders fra i precursori di quel genere oggi universalmente chiamato Americana, insieme a Blasters,Los Lobos ed i meno conosciuti Beat Farmers. Griffin è sempre stato un grandissimo fan dei Byrds (e la “y” nel moniker del suo gruppo la dice lunga) e durante la breve esistenza della band ha sempre coniugato il folk-rock tipico del combo guidato da Roger McGuinn con grandi iniezioni di energia e ritmo, tanto rock’n’roll ed un po’ di country-rock (anche i Flying Burrito Brothers sono tra i suoi eroi), aiutato dal suo braccio destro Stephen McCarthy alle chitarre soliste (ed occasionalmente suo partner nella scrittura dei pezzi), Tom Stevens al basso (che ha sostituito Des Brewer dopo l’EP d’esordio) e Greg Sowders alla batteria.
Solo tre LP (più il già citato EP) nei cinque anni di vita del gruppo, una discografia troppo breve e che avrebbe meritato maggior fortuna, e che abbiamo il grande piacere di riscoprire oggi grazie a questo pratico boxettino edito dalla Cherry Red: quattro CD con tutta la storia dei Ryders, diverse rarità ed inediti, ed un concerto assolutamente mai sentito come bonus, il tutto in una pratica confezione (sullo stile del box di Fisherman’s Blues dei Waterboys), con un bel libretto che reca note dettagliate e commenti canzone per canzone dei membri del gruppo (principalmente Griffin), il tutto neanche troppo costoso.
CD1: qui troviamo il loro EP di debutto 10-5-60 (cinque brani) seguito dal loro primo LP Native Sons, e l’inizio è subito di quelli giusti, con la solare e corale Join My Gang, che ricorda un po’ i primi R.E.M. (anch’essi epigoni dei Byrds), subito seguito dal rockin’ country You Don’t Know What’s Right, You Don’t Know What’s Wrong, decisamente trascinante e suonato con l’energia di una punk band; e che dire di 10-5-60, sembrano i Sonics o qualche altra garage band degli anni sessanta, mentre Born To Believe In You è un delizioso country-pop con accenni beatlesiani. Anche Tom Petty è tra i preferiti di Griffin, e lo dimostra la roccata Final Wild Song, che ricorda il suono secco e diretto dei primi due album del biondo rocker della Florida; la splendida Ivory Tower è un trionfo di jingle-jangle sound (e c’è anche Gene Clark ospite ai cori), Run Dusty Run è un rock’n’roll che mette di buon umore, mentre (Sweet) Mental Revenge (un classico di Mel Tillis) è country-rock sotto steroidi. Ma tutto Native Sons è un esempio di adrenalina, grinta ed energia coniugate a squisite melodie (un altro esempio è la coinvolgente Tell It To The Judge On Sunday); una rara versione della dylaniana Masters Of War precede cinque inediti dal vivo, tra i quali spiccano un’intensa versione acustica del traditional Farther Along (sembrano Garcia e Grisman) e la goduriosa The Rains Came, tratta dal repertorio del Sir Douglas Quintet.
CD2: ecco lo splendido State Of Our Union, l’album migliore dei Ryders, ed anche il più conosciuto grazie al moderato successo del singolo Looking For Lewis And Clark, forse non il loro brano più bello ma con dalla sua un tiro micidiale; nel disco troviamo anche la tersa e byrdsiana Lights Of Downtown e la roboante WDIA, con più di un rimando al suono dei Creedence. Un grande album, dal quale riascoltiamo con piacere anche la pettyiana Mason-Dixon Line o l’irresistibile Here Comes That Train Again, un limpido esempio di Americana anni ’80, un pezzo che potrebbero aver scritto anche i Los Lobos di How Will The Wolf Survive?, o ancora la vibrante Good Times Tomorrow, Bad Times Today e la fluida Capturing The Flag, un trionfo di Rickenbacker sound, o il rock’n’roll alla Beach Boys State Of My Union, per non parlare del delizioso cajun Child Bride…e se non sto attento le cito tutte! Tra gli extra una Looking For Lewis And Clark dal vivo alla BBC, ancora più dura dell’originale, la bizzarra ma gradevole Christmas In New Zealand e due remix scintillanti di Lights Of Downtown e Capturing The Flag, ancora meglio di quelle uscite nel 1985.
CD3: il loro ultimo album, Two Fisted Tales, un altro ottimo disco, di pochissimo inferiore al precedente, tutto da godere a partire dall’esplosivo avvio di Gunslinger Man, rock chitarristico di prima scelta, passando per I Want You Bad, bellissimo folk-rock byrdsiano al 100%, la cadenzata A Stitch In Time, lo spettacolare cajun-rock The Light Gets In The Way (con David Hidalgo alla fisarmonica), oppure Prairie Fire una sventagliata punk in pieno volto, o la stupenda Harriet Tubman’s Gonna Carry Me Home, un folk purissimo che profuma di tradizione, o ancora la travolgente Spectacular Fall. Tra le rarità abbiamo l’adrenalinico rock’n’roll di Basic Black, la scorrevole How Do We Feel What’s Real, la toccante He Can Hear His Brother Calling, una delle rare ballate del gruppo (e con reminiscenze di The Band), la gioiosa, a dispetto del titolo, Sad Sad Songs, durante la quale è impossibile tener fermo il piede.
CD4: la vera chicca del box, un concerto completamente inedito (ed inciso benissimo), registrato nel 1985 a Goes, in Olanda: 53 minuti di puro ed adrenalinico rock’n’roll, senza neppure un attimo di respiro, una festa assoluta di ritmo e chitarre, con versioni superbe di Run Dusty Run, la sempre splendida Ivory Tower, Wreck Of The 809, You Don’t Know What’s Right, You Don’t Know What’s Wrong, una trascinante versione del classico per camionisti Six Days On The Road ed un finale a tutta elettricità e ritmo con Tell It To The Judge On Sunday.
Dopo l’esperienza con i Long Ryders, Griffin fonderà i Coal Porters (attivi ancora oggi), con i quali pubblicherà qualche discreto album ma senza la scintilla originale, pubblicherà qualche album da solista in anni recenti e riformerà i Ryders per un tour commemorativo nel 2004 (con conseguente album dal vivo), dedicandosi anche al giornalismo rock ed alla stesura di libri su Bob Dylan e Gram Parsons. Ma i tempi d’oro del periodo con i Long Ryders difficilmente torneranno, motivo in più per non lasciarsi sfuggire questo Final Wild Songs.
Ci eravamo lasciati con la prima parte di questa rubrica nella prima decade di gennaio, in cui promettevo che ci sarebbero state altre due puntate dedicate alle anticipazioni discografiche sulle uscite del mese. In seguito, come avrete notato, molti album in uscita hanno avuto, e avranno, dei Post specifici a loro dedicati; domani penso Eleanor Friedberger, nei prossimi giorni a seguire Ben Caplan, Tedeschi Trucks Band e altri. Ovviamente comunque non si riesce a recensire tutto, per cui questa rubrica rimane utile per tratteggiare e segnalare in breve le novità più importanti, cercando di tornare, ove possibile, su quelle più interessanti, sempre, più o meno, secondo i nostri gusti. Oggi tocca ad alcuni cofanetti in uscita in questo mese di gennaio.
Iniziamo con il box di 4 CD dedicato ai Long Ryders, titolo Final Wild Songs, etichetta Cherry Red Records, riporta la discografia completa della band di Sid Griffin e Stephen McCarthy, quindi tutti gli EP ed album originali, periodo storico anni 80, rimasterizzati ed arricchiti da bonus copiose, più un concerto inedito Live ‘T Beest, Goes, The Netherlands.

E anche i due cofanetti successivi, già ristampati, che completano la trilogia, sarebbero da avere. Meglio di quella di “Guerre Stellari”, la prima serie!
Se vi eravate persi le precedenti ristampe di questo Live At Max’s Kansas City dei Velvet Underground, compresa quella doppia uscita nel 2004, potreste approfittare di questa ennesima versione uscita di recente nel box multiplo di Re-Loaded della band di Lou Reed. In questa edizione con masterizzazione targata 2015 abbiamo 15 brani tratti dal famoso concerto dell’agosto 1970 che testimonia l’ultima apparizione di Lou con il gruppo, prima della reunion del 1993.

La band di Michael Nesmith, nata quasi per scherzo a seguito di un audizione per creare un gruppo creato a tavolino che doveva essere la risposta americana ai Beatles, in seguito, per certi versi, lo è stata davvero, lasciando una notevole quantità di belle canzoni e una serie di album che sentiti ancora oggi non hanno perso una briciola della freschezza che avevano ai tempi.
L’americana Rockbeat, che di solito si occupa della pubblicazione di dischi con concerti inediti, spesso di provenienza radiofonica, questa volta edita un doppio CD, Critic’s Choice 1947-1971, che attraverso le 46 canzoni contenute nei due dischetti ripercorre la carriera di Muddy Waters. Non credo che ci sia materiale inedito, comunque se non avete nulla, ad un rapido esame della tracklist riportata qui sopra, trovate tutti i grandi classici di McKinley Morganfield, tratti dal periodo passato alla Chess Records, anche se esistono già altre mille antologie.
Viceversa dei The Truth in CD esisteva poco o nulla, anzi di loro si erano perse le tracce e credo che il nome dica poco a quasi tutti. Si tratta della band formata da Dennis Greaves, il bravissimo cantante e chitarrista dei Nine Below Zero, dopo lo scioglimento della propria band nel 1982, e che pubblicò tre album in quegli anni (di cui gli ultimi due, fine anni ’80, con buon successo negli States, ma con un sound che virava pericolosamente verso un AOR tamarro come pochi), peraltro non compresi in questo cofanetto da 3 CD, che infatti giustamente si chiama A Step In The Right Direction Singles Demos BBC Sessions 1983-1984, e che vede Greaves affiancato dall’altro chitarrista Mick Lister, per una versione più leggera, tra R&B, soul e Mod dei NBZ, sulla scia dello scioglimento dei Jam di Paul Weller.

Come vedete moltissimo materiale inedito, tra cui un poderoso Live At The Marquee che quasi rivaleggia con quello della band originale di Greaves. Le note del libretto contenuto nel box sono firmate da Lois Wilson di Mojo, con la diretta collaborazione di Greaves e Lister.
Un’altra etichetta inglese, la RPM, pubblica questo triplo cofanetto, Looking Stateside, sottotitolato 80 US R&B Mod, Soul And Garage Nuggets, che raccoglie una serie di brani rari e oscuri, spesso inediti su CD, ancor di più di quelli contenuti nei famosi box di Nuggets. Quindi se amate garage, psych-rock, frat -rock, ma anche soul e R&B, qui c’è veramente trippa per gatti. Il cofanetto è il seguito di tre compilations, sempre di questa serie “Looking…”uscite negli scorsi anni, più orientare verso materiale di provenienza britannica. Alcuni gruppi sono anche “famosi” ( i Brogues erano quelli di I Ain’t No Miracle Worker, per noi italiani Sono Un Ragazzo Di Strada dei Corvi, i Champs quelli di Tequila, in Gotta Have A New Dress di Curtis Knight, c’è Jimi Hendrix alla chitarra, Timi Yuro era quella di Hurt, sempre per noi italici, A Chi di Fausto Leali) ma in questo caso si tratta di brani veramente sconosciuti anche per gli appassionati.
