ZZTop – La Futura – American/Universal Republic – 11-09-2012

Alla fine ce l’hanno fatta! Esce persino in anticipo sulle ultime previsioni che davano fine settembre. Si tratta del famoso album prodotto da Rick Rubin, conterrà tutti e quattro i brani che facevano parte dell’EP digitale Texicali e anche Flyin’ High, il brano che hanno “sparato” sulla navetta spaziale Soyuz.

Torniamo alla terminologia spagnola che ha accompagnato alcuni degli album migliori del gruppo, Tres Hombres, Fandango, El Loco, Deguello ed ora questo La Futura. Tra i brani c’è anche una It’s Too Easy Manana scritta da Gillian Welch e David Rawlings e comunque, in generale, c’è un ritorno al boogie-southern-blues-rock dei tempi migliori senza troppe concessioni alla tecnologia come già riscontrato dall’ascolto dell’ottimo EP che ha preceduto l’album. Melissa Etheridge – 4Th Street Feeling – Island – 04-09-2012

L’ultimo album Fearless Love non mi aveva entusiasmato, e se è per questo neppure quello prima The Awakening, anche se se entrambi avevano avuto buone critiche. Questo 4th Street Feeling mi sembra partire da presupposti migliori: nuovo produttore in sostituzione del bombastico John Shanks, anzi due, Jacquire King, reduce dai lavori con Of Monsters And Men, Punch Brothers, Kings Of Leon e Steve Booker, dal tocco più pop, Duffy e Dionne Bromfield. Il singolo che annuncia l’album, Falling Up, addirittura è una deviazione verso territori country, un brano scritto in omaggio alle canzoni di Tammy Wynette e Loretta Lynn, visto attraverso la sua ottica, una specie di ritorno alle origini per Melissa Etheridge, che ad inizio carriera si affidava a quel tipo di repertorio e nei primi album a fianco della sua anima rockettara univa anche atmosfere più acustiche e l’arte della ballata che negli ultimi anni senza scomparire si era un po’ affievolita. Vedremo se questo album sarà un ritorno agli “antichi splendori”, per il momento…

Graham Bond Organization – Wade In The Water – 4 CD – Repertoire Records – 25-09-2012

Cambiamo completamente registro per questo succoso cofanetto dedicato all’opera del grande musicista inglese che ad inizio anni ’60 fu uno dei fondatori del movimento Rhythm & Blues, Blues, Jazz-rock e poi rock, in Inghilterra. Nel suo gruppo hanno suonato Jack Bruce, Ginger Baker, John McLaughlin, Dick Heckstall-Smith, Jon Hiseman, tra gli altri. Questo cofanetto, pubblicato dalla Repertoire, è stato curato da Pete Brown (il paroliere dei Cream e Jack Bruce, oltre che ottimo musicista in proprio) e da Dick Heckstall-Smith (così dicono le note di presentazione, ma il sassofonista dei Colosseum è morto nel 2004). Graham Bond addirittura ci aveva lasciato nel lontano 1974 a soli 37 anni ma questo Wade In The Water, sottotitolato Classics, Origins & Oddities raccoglie il meglio della sua produzione con molti inediiti e rarità, 96 brani in tutto:

Questo esce la settimana prossima negli Stati Uniti per gli specialisti in “stranezze” della Cleopatra Records. Una volta che ci siamo messi d’accordo su cosa si intende per All-Star, questo tributo è molto interessante per gli appassionati del Prog ( e non solo) Colin Moulding degli Xtc che canta It’s Raining Again in coppia con Geoff Downes?!? Outlaws – Anthology (Live & rare) 1973-1981 – 4 CD – Cleopatra Records 11-09-2012

E visto che parliamo di Cleopatra Records, esce un altro dei loro gustosi box dedicati al passato, dopo Quicksilver e Santana, questa volta rivolgono la loro attenzione agli Outlaws, una delle migliori formazioni southern rock degli anni ’70. Tra l’altro nel mese di settembre, il 25, il gruppo pubblicherà anche un nuovo album di studio, It’s About Pride, il primo da 18 anni a questa parte. Della formazione originale sono rimasti Henry Paul e il batterista Monte Yoho, ma non si tratta di un caso di litigi interni, purtroppo gli altri componenti originali del gruppo, Hughie Thomasson, Billy Jones e Frank O’Keefe sono tutti scomparsi. Uno dei nuovi chitarristi è l’ottimo Billy Crain, fratello di Tom a lungo nella Charlie Daniels Band di cui si è parlato recentemente nel Blog e anche un paio di anni fa di non-solo-southern-rock-billy-crain-skeletons-in-the-closet.html.

Martha Wainwright – Come Home To Mama – V2 Coop(Universal) – 16-10-2012

Qui si va molto in avanti nel tempo come data di uscita, ma già che ci siamo! Esce il nuovo album della brava Martha, figlia e sorella di…, e molto brava pure di suo. Il disco (terzo album di studio) è stato registrato in quel di New York nello studio di Sean Lennon, con la produzione di Yukio Honda delle Cibo Matto. Qualche “pirla” ha equivocato i comunicati stampa e in giro probabilmente troverete scritto che nel disco suona anche Nels Cline, il marito di Martha Wainwright?!?. Invece la frase esatta presumo dovesse essere: nel disco suonano il marito di Martha (tale Brad Albetta, al basso), virgola, Nels Cline, il grande chitarrista dei Wilco nonché Jim White alla batteria e Thomas Bartlett alle tastiere. Mancano un paio di mesi all’uscita per cui ci ritornerò con più calma (tempo permettendo), nel frattempo questi i titoli della versione Deluxe che avrà 13 brani:

Ci sarebbe da parlare anche del tributo ai Talk Talk, di due nuovi album di Jeff Lynne, uno di cover e l’altro di brani dell’Electric Light Orchestra re-incisi in nuove versioni, del nuovo Anita Baker, di Donald Fagen  Sunken Condos il 16 ottobre e molti altri di cui non ho ancora dati e date certe per cui rimandiamo ad altra occasione. Diciamo che da domani riprendiamo la “programmazione” abituale del Blog sempre pronti ad eventuali aggiornamenti.
