Janis Joplin, Gli Anni Del “Grande Fratello” 1966-1968 – Cheap Thrills E Il Rock Non Sarà Più Lo Stesso Parte II

A giugno, su invito dei Mamas And Papas che lo organizzavano, insieme a Lou Adler, Derek Taylor ed altri, partecipano al Monterey Pop Festival (la parola rock non era ancora stata sdoganata), ottenendo un successo clamoroso. Il loro “geniale” manager dell’epoca non diede il permesso al regista D.A. Pennebaker, che stava filmando l’evento, di riprendere il loro set del sabato 17 giugno, senza prima essere pagati. Ovviamente gli organizzatori entusiasti della loro esibizione pensarono di inserire la band di nuovo nel programma della domenica, e così fu fatto, anche se suonarono solo due brani, contro i cinque del giorno prima, ma l’esecuzione di Ball And Chain, il pezzo di Big Mama Thornton, è entrato giustamente negli annali della storia della musica rock, come una delle più straordinarie, viscerali, commoventi, performance di sempre, con Janis Joplin che lasciò completamente senza fiato il pubblico presente: sintomatico è il “wow” che si vede formarsi sulle labbra di Mama Cass Elliott alla fine dell’esibizione e la sua amica Michelle Phillips che pensava che la Joplin avesse cantato come una rediviva Bessie Smith. In un Festival ricco di momenti straordinari ed unici, quel brano rimane scolpito nella memoria collettiva, insieme alle esibizioni di Jimi Hendrix, con chitarra incendiata e performance stellare, Otis Redding che porta la musica soul alla conoscenza di tutti con un set altrettanto incendiario, scomparendo poi solo sei mesi dopo nel famoso incidente aereo, e gli Who, con batterie e chitarre che volavano sul palco mentre Townshend e Moon si “incazzavano” a comando.

Comunque i Big Brother & The Holding Co., che nei sei mesi precedenti vissuti in California, in una sorta di ritiro in una comune a Marin County, provando, riprovando, esibendosi anche dal vivo e probabilmente dedicandosi anche ad “attività ludiche”, erano diventati una fior di band, diedero l’impressione di essersi trasformati in un gruppo solido e complessivamente di grande spessore. Diciamo che l’uscita dell’album, avvenuta solo ad agosto, e con un suono che non era quello esibito a Monterey, pur godendo della spinta di quell’evento e rimanendo in classifica per una trentina di settimane, non andò oltre il 60° posto. Comunque nell’album ci sono alcuni brani che, pur non essendo versioni definitive e soddisfacenti, a causa della produzione poco incisiva di Bob Shad, sono rimaste a lungo nel repertorio di Janis: canzoni come Bye Bye Baby, Light Is Faster Than Sound, All Is Loneliness e soprattutto Down On Me, sono rimasti comunque nel repertorio live della band, diventando dei piccoli classici, e anche Women Is Losers e Call On Me non erano male, senza dimenticare che nella riedizione dell’album da parte della Columbia, per capitalizzare sulla fama raggiunta dopo l’esibizione a Monterey e il successo crescente, vennero aggiunti due brani, entrambi pubblicati come singoli, The Last Time, e soprattutto Coo Coo, uno dei pezzi suonati nella prima esibizione al Festival di Monterey.

Per avere una idea piuttosto approfondita delle vicende della band vi consiglio l’ottimo DVD edito dalla Eagle Vision nel 2009, relativo al documentario girato nel 2001 da Michael Burlingame, intitolato Big Brother And The Holding Co. With Janis – Nine Hundred Nights, che traccia in modo preciso e molto ben documentato ed in oltre due ore, l’intero percorso artistico della band, dalla scelta del nome, ad un capitolo dedicato alla scena psichedelica, i primi incontri tra i vari protagonisti, fino all’ingresso nella formazione di Dave Getz e Janis Joplin, i concerti all’Avalon e al Fillmore, un altro capitolo dal titolo piuttosto esplicito “Drugs Everywhere”, l’esibizione trionfale al Monterey Pop Festival, con le due canzoni dello show della domenica, CombinationOf The Two e Ball And Chain, l’arrivo del nuovo manager Albert Grossman, e l’inizio della preparazione del nuovo album Sex, Dope and Cheap Thrills.

Sex, Dope And Cheap Thrills

Il 1968 inizia con la prima tappa della conquista della Costa Est degli Stati Uniti, i Big Brother arrivano a New York per alcuni concerti all’Anderson Theatre, tra cui il primo in assoluto il 17 febbraio del 1968, e meno di un mese dopo, l’8 marzo,  inaugurano il Fillmore East di Bill Graham. Le recensioni dei giornali locali non furono molto positive, dicendo che gli strumenti erano scordati e il volume era a livelli micidiali, tanto che si usciva dal concerto con le orecchie che fischiavano. Dai filmati dell’epoca si percepisce che in effetti i cinque non erano forse il massimo della finezza e della precisione, però il suono che usciva dagli amplificatori era potente e vibrante e la loro cantante una vera forza della natura anche in questi spettacoli indoor: il 7 aprile, durante le registrazioni per Cheap Thrills, i Big Brother parteciparono ad una serata di veglia al Generation Club, un piccolo locale di New York, denominata Wake For Martin Luther King, in ricordo del grande politico ed attivista, che era stato assassinato 3 giorni prima a Memphis, alla serata di cui esistono riprese non ufficiali, erano presenti molti musicisti importanti, tra cui Jimi Hendrix che si vede ai piedi del palco durante l’esibizione del gruppo.

Che senza tenere la media frenetica di show, spesso giornaliera, che aveva avuto nel biennio 1966/1967 in vari locali di tutta la California, con la pausa della trasferta a Chicago, anche nel 1968, si esibì comunque a Phiadelphia, Detroit, Boston, di nuovo a Chicago, e anche in altre serate al Generation Club, il tutto mentre procedevano le registrazioni per il nuovo album, iniziate il 2 marzo ai Columbia Recording Studios di New York e portate a termine a quelli di Hollywood il 20 maggio, con qualche traccia registrata ai Golden State Recorders di San Francisco, con la produzione di John Simon, che dopo avere prodotto un disco di Gordon Lightoot, venne chiamato da Albert Grossman a produrre Cheap Thrills, ma raggiungerà fama imperitura con la Band. Il disco, come è noto avrebbe dovuto chiamarsi Sex, Dope And Cheap Thrills, ma il titolo fu rigettato dalla Columbia, come pure la foto di copertina, che li vedeva diciamo poco vestiti, o se preferite, quasi completamente ignudi, su un letto di una camera d’albergo: quindi eliminati il sex e il dope, rimasero i Cheap Thrills la cui immagine fu affidata al grande disegnatore Robert Crumb, che realizzò una copertina che comunque nel “fumetto” realizzato, la sua quota lisergica e sessuale ce l’aveva comunque, e rimane una delle copertine più celebri di sempre.

Mentre il gruppo, rientrato in California, continua ad esibirsi in concerti a raffica, tra cui epocali sono quelli pubblicati nel 1998, come Live At Winterland 1968, con il meglio delle due serate del 12 e 13 aprile, e Live At the Carousel Ballroom1968, con la serata del 23 giugno, altro concerto formidabile che li fotografa in uno degli ultimi momenti di grande splendore. Non perché non ce ne saranno altri, ma perché Janis Joplin cominciava già a meditare di lasciare il gruppo per registrare un “album soul” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-oni7BjLcVQ . Comunque il 12 agosto esce l’album, sotto forma di finto live, con gli applausi aggiunti da John Simon, perché quello era il progetto iniziale, salvo un brano Ball And Chain che, nonostante il LP riporti fu registrato al Fillmore, in effetti viene dal concerto al Winterland Ballroom citato poc’anzi. Il disco raggiunse la vetta delle classifiche americane, dove rimase per otto settimane consecutive, non male se pensate a quali e quanti album c’erano in circolazione in quella annata straordinaria. Complessivamente il LP vendette due milioni di copie e pure Piece Of My Heart fu un grande successo arrivando fino al 12° posto delle classifiche dei singoli.

Come complemento potremmo aggiungere che il DVD ricordato prima, contiene anche un affascinante e lunga sequenza che riprende la band proprio mentre prova alcuni brani dell’album, tra cui ripetute e molto dibattute, con Simon, quelle per Summertime, una delle canzoni più importanti di quelle sessions. Alla fine dell’estate Janis annuncia ufficialmente la sua decisione di andarsene e il 1° Dicembre del 1968 a San Francisco tiene il suo ultimo concerto con i Big Brother. The Mamas And The Papas, per chiamarli con il loro nome completo, uno dei gruppi cardine del cosiddetto movimento hippy della seconda metà degli anni sessanta, e tra i principali esponenti della Summer Of Love, sono stati negli anni il soggetto per innumerevoli antologie, la migliore delle quali è senza dubbio il box quadruplo, intitolato appunto Complete Anthology, uscito nel 2004.

Questo doppio CD da poco uscito per la Real Gone, intitolato The Complete Singles (che celebra i 50 anni dalla nascita del quartetto), si piazza però subito dietro: esso ripercorre, come suggerisce il titolo, la carriera del gruppo guidato da John Phillips prendendo in esame i brani usciti su 45 giri, comprendendo anche i lati B (alcuni di essi mai usciti su CD prima d’ora), ed aggiungendo anche i rari singoli da solista di tre dei quattro membri della band, il tutto presentato nell’ormai introvabile missaggio in mono, tranne cinque pezzi, (*NDB, ma io preferisco quello stereo, vedi e senti il video sotto) per un totale di ben 53 canzoni. I Mamas & Papas, che oltre a Phillips (songwriter principale, ed autore tra l’altro anche dell’inno hippy San Francisco di Scott McKenzie   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i9xVMjjjg0Ued organizzatore del primo festival rock della storia, quello di Monterey) erano formati dalla bellissima Michelle Gilliam-Phillips (seconda moglie di John), la monumentale (in tutti i sensi) “Mama” Cass Elliott e da Denny Doherty, hanno legato il loro nome a doppio filo al loro più grande successo, quella California Dreamin’ per la quale non è esagerato parlare di canzone simbolo di un’epoca, ma, come dimostra questa antologia, la bravura del quartetto nel coniugare folk, pop e rock con uno squisito gusto melodico e splendide armonie vocali (unita alla sapiente produzione del grande Lou Adler) andava ben oltre quel singolo brano.

Il primo CD prende in esame il periodo d’oro della band, quello dal 1965 al 1968, anno in cui si separarono, pare soprattutto per problemi familiari tra John e Michelle, che infatti divorziarono (sembra che alla bionda cantante piacesse, per così dire, mettere in pratica le teorie dell’amore libero – si narra di storie con lo stesso Doherty e con l’ex Byrd Gene Clark – ma che John non approvasse molto): a noi però interessa la musica, è qui ce n’è di bellissima, anche se in certi punti gli arrangiamenti possono suonare un tantino fuori moda; ad accompagnare i quattro ci sono fior di musicisti, come P.F. Sloan, Hal Blaine, Joe Osborn, lo straordinario pianista Larry Knetchel e Jim Horn.

Già l’iniziale Go Where You Gonna Go, fresca ed estremamente orecchiabile, fa capire che i nostri non perdevano tempo, ed infatti la terza e la quarta canzone sono già i loro due più grandi hits, cioè appunto California Dreamin’ e Monday Monday (che inizialmente ebbe anche più successo della precedente https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h81Ojd3d2rY ); ma poi abbiamo anche l’irresistibile I Saw Her Again, tra Beatles e Beach Boys https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9zBMK5OAGyE , la languida Look Through My Window, la bizzarra ma divertente Once Was A Time I Thought (uno scioglilingua più che una canzone), la strepitosa Words Of Love, tra rock e vaudeville https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OouK3QOzW6Q  (seguita dal suo lato B, una brillante versione di Dancing In The Streets di Martha & The Vandellas), l’eterea Dedicated To The One I Love https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4M7gKZqgHn4 , la deliziosa ed autoironica (“no one’s getting fat except Mama Cass”) Creeque Alley, altro grande successo del quartetto.

Ma poi come non citare anche Did You Ever Want To Cry, dall’andamento quasi dixieland, la quasi spectoriana Twelve Thirty, la diretta e fluida Hey Girl, la sinuosa e bucolica Dancing Bear, una squisita versione dell’evergreen Dream A Little Dream Of Me, con Mama Cass perfetta alla voce solista https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ajwnmkEqYpo , per finire con Strange Young Girls, uno splendido folk dal sapore tradizionale inglese, che li fa sembrare più vicini ai Pentangle che alle loro abituali sonorità californiane.

Sul secondo CD troviamo l’ultimo singolo prima del breakup (due buone cover di Do You Wanna Dance di Bobby Freeman e di My Girl dei Temptations) e l’unico tratto dal loro poco riuscito comeback album del 1971, People Like Us, con Step Out e Shooting Star, due pezzi che risentono di uno stile un po’ leccato e troppo commerciale, poco adatto al gruppo. Poi, come già accennato, ci si concentra sui brani solisti usciti nel periodo dopo la prima separazione (1968-1971) di tre quarti della band (Michelle in quel periodo farà solo da corista on stage per Leonard Cohen nel 1970 e poi si dedicherà quasi totalmente alla carriera cinematografica), con Mama Cass che fa la parte del leone con ben sedici pezzi, tutti piuttosto gradevoli e non molto distanti dallo stile della sua ex band, anche se manca la penna di Phillips (Move A Little Closer, Baby ricorda un po’ gli Abba qualche anno prima della loro nascita): c’è anche Make Your Own Kind Of Music, peraltro molto bella, tornata di recente alla ribalta in quanto contenuta in alcuni episodi della popolare serie televisiva Lost https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PEQxEJ5_5zA . Per finire abbiamo due brani del mitico primo album solista di John Phillips, ed unico pubblicato in vita, John, The Wolfking Of L.A. (uno dei miei cinque dischi da isola deserta), la vivace Mississippi e la sublime April Anne (ma anche Topanga Canyon era un pezzo da novanta), e quattro pezzi del 1971 di Doherty, tutti piuttosto gradevoli e countryeggianti, nel pieno spirito country-rock californiano che da lì ad un anno vedrà esordire gli Eagles (ed il produttore di queste quattro canzoni è Bill Szymczyk – cambiare cognome no? – che più avanti legherà il suo nome proprio alle Aquile).

Da lì in poi le strade dei quattro si incontreranno solo saltuariamente: Mama Cass morirà tragicamente d’infarto nel 1974, Michelle (l’unica ancora in vita) sposerà l’attore Dennis Hopper (il secondo di cinque mariti), proseguendo la carriera di attrice e pubblicando un unico album nel 1977, John inciderà ancora (ma tutti lavori che verranno pubblicati dopo la morte avvenuta nel 2001), tenterà di rivitalizzare la vecchia band negli anni ottanta per alcuni tour (con solo lui e Doherty come membri originali) e rimarrà invischiato in brutte storie di droga ed addirittura incesto con la figlia avuta dalla prima moglie, mentre Doherty sparirà un po’ dai radar, fino alla morte per aneurisma avvenuta nel 2007.

Ma a me piace ricordarli quando erano giovani ed attivi, e The Complete Singles è il modo migliore per farlo.

Tra il 3 e il 30 settembre verranno ripubblicati, in versione budget, alcuni dei cofanetti classici del repertorio Warner/Rhino. E sarà proprio la succursale europea dell’etichetta americana a farlo. meno un titolo che verrà edito dalla Salvo Records e di cui parliamo tra un attimo. Tutte e cinque le uscite dovrebbero avere un prezzo indicativo tra i 25 e i 30 euro e non sempre i formati saranno quelli che vedrete nelle “immaginette” allegate al Post in questione. Il sito della Rhino Uk non riporta ancora le immagini di come saranno i box in queste nuove versioni, anche se il contenuto sarà lo stesso delle edizioni già esistenti, per cui mi sono limitato ad utilizzare quanto già esisteva e di cui sono anch’io felice possessore e non destinato a ulteriori acquisti, ma che mi sento di consigliarvi, in quanto si tratta di materiale imprescindibile per l’amante della buona musica, se già non li annoverate nella vostra collezione.

Per esempio le immagini del cofanetto Woodstock 40: Back To Yasgur’s Farm sono rispettivamente quelle dell’edizione europea ed americana, che avevano due copertine diverse, ma stesso contenuto. Pubblicate nel 2009, per il 40° Anniversario dalla data del Festival americano, sono le versioni definitive ed ampliate a 6 CD. Con un’unica pecca, per problemi con Alvin Lee, non contengono la mitica versione di I’m Going Home dei Ten Years After, che invece era presente nella versione espansa del DVD pubblicata nella stessa occasione. Comunque quello che “resta” è abbondantemente in grado di soddisfarvi:

Una settimana prima, il 3 settembre, la Salvo Records, altra benemerita etichetta inglese specializzata in ristampe ripubblica Monterey International Pop Festival June 16-17-18 1967, la testimonianza dell’altro grande Festival degli anni ’60, tenuto solo due anni prima e pubblicato come cofanetto dalla Rhino negli anni ’90 ma non più disponibile da molto tempo. Sempre il 10 settembre, su Rhino, tornerà disponibile anche la versione completa in 4 CD di The Last Waltz, il famoso concerto del 1976 della Band con una miriade di ospiti. Devo dire che l’edizione che vedete effigiata qui sopra ed uscita nel 2008 si trova ancora in circolazione, ma non so dirvi se sarà la stessa che verrà utilizzata in questa nuova versione. Presumo di no, dovrebbe essere un cofanetto di formato più piccolo, tipo quello che vedete a fine post per CSN.
