Ovviamente con questa rubrica non si vogliono esaminare tutte le uscite della prossima estate, ce ne sono altre interessanti che verranno considerate al momento giusto e altre sicuramente se ne aggiungeranno. Come per la prima parte, partiamo dal titolo la cui pubblicazione è piu imminente: si tratta di un nuovo disco di Sharon Van Etten, etichetta Jagjaguwar, data di rilascio 9 giugno, il titolo è I Don’t Want To Let You Down, si tratta solo di un EP, cinque brani in tutto, di cui uno dal vivo. La troviamo anche nel tributo a Karen Dalton, appena uscito, e segnalato di recente, ma la cantautrice del New Jersey non manca mai di emozionare con ogni suo album, anche mini:

E’ facile fare dell’ironia ma erano già nove mesi che non veniva pubblicato qualche registrazione inedita di Jerry Garcia (a parte vari broadcast radiofonici, diciamo non ufficiali), ma questo nuovo On Broadway: Act One non fa parte della rinomata serie GarciaLive giunta al quinto capitolo, bensì inaugura una nuova serie di registrazioni di ben 13 serate tenute a Broadway nell’autunno del 1987 (ebbene sì). Questo primo volume, in 3 CD, pubblicati dalla ATO Records, riporta i tre set completi della serata del 28 ottobre 1987 al Lunt-Fontanne Theatre, sia la parte acustica che quella elettrica, con questa sequenza di brani:

Data di uscita del triplo CD 23 giugno. Se vi dice qualcosa è perché altri concerti di questa serie erano usciti come Pure Jerry, ma questa serata è inedita.

Se vi chiedete chi diavolo sia la Orange Humble Band era quello che mi chiedevo anch’io, poi mi sono informato e ora ve lo dico. Intanto vengono dall’Australia, o meglio, da lì viene il fondatore e principale autore del gruppo Darryl Mather, ex Lime Spiders. Il gruppo ha registrato due album e un EP tra la metà anni ’90 e il 2001, quando è uscito Humblin’ (Across America), registrato un paio di anni prima. Dopo una dozzina di anni di giusta pausa l’Orange Humble Band si è ritrovata negli studi Ardent di Memphis, con Mitch Easter, il famoso produttore e musicista (anche del giro R.E.M. e Let’s Active) sempre presente, alla batteria Jody Stephens dei Big Star, Ken Stringfellow dei Posies e una notevole serie di ospiti, da Dwight Twilley a Jon Auer, sempre dei Posies, Spooner Oldham (già presente nel precedente album), Rick Steff dei Lucero, Susan Cowsill, Dave Smith (bassista di Cat Power e Buddy Guy) e molti altri. Il risultato viene pubblicato dalla Citadel Records (quindi non di facile reperibilità) il 30 giugno.

Qualche tempo fa vi ho parlato, non troppo bene, dell’uscita, tra una decina di giorni, su etichetta DGG, della versione classica di Quadrophenia. Confermo, non mi piace: ma a fine giugno, sempre per il gruppo Universal, uscirà questo Truancy The Very Best Of Pete Townshend, antologia che annuncia la prossima ristampa del catalogo di Townshend; non so dirvi se gli album usciranno in versioni potenziate da bonus ( e il chitarrista e cantante inglese ha un archivio mostruoso) ma in questo Best Of ci sono comunque due brani nuovi, Guantanamo https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BU4PKdWoE6U e How Can I Help You, un brano in gestazione da una decina di anni https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PzwaUgXAZFk Nella raccolta ci sono 17 brani in tutto, molte belle canzoni, perché ne ha scritte parecchie anche fuori dagli Who, e se non volete (o non avete già) i vari album solisti, questo CD è una buona idea:

Si tratta di un cofanetto di 4 CD, etichetta Sony Legacy , con i due concerti completi, registrati appena dopo l’uscita del loro terzo album Life, e quindi nel periodo migliore della band. Il prezzo, almeno in Europa, dovrebbe essere più contenuto che in America dove si parla di circa 50 dollari.

Per il 17 luglio è annunciata l’uscita del nuovo album solista dell’ex Drive-By Truckers Jason Isbell, titolo Something More Than Free, etichetta Southeastern, che è anche il titolo del suo ottimo precedente album del 2013. Il disco, che vede anche la presenza della “incintissima moglie” Amanda Shires al violino e alle armonie vocali (recentemente hanno partecipato al David Letterman Show con una bella versione di Mutineer di Warren Zevon https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1urvSKb_2Ws ) , già sentito, è molto bello, tra country, rock e roots music, alcune belle ballate che ricordano Jackson Browne (forse per la presenza del violino) e una produzione molto consistente di David Cobb, effettuata negli studi Sound Emporium di Nashville. Siamo molto in anticipo ma segnatevelo, perché merita!

Sempre tra le uscite future, fine luglio, il 24 è annunciato un nuovo album solista di Warren Haynes Ashes And Dust, con la partecipazione fissa dei Railroad Earth, quindi con sonorità diverse dai “soliti” dischi del biondo chitarrista americano, più country-bluegrass-roots oriented, anche folk se volete, ma il rock non mancherà. Etichetta Provogue/Mascot in Europa e Concord in America, uscirà anche una versione Deluxe, ma nel caso merita, in quanto sarà un doppio CD, con questo contenuto:
