Stax Singles – Rarities And The Best Of The Rest – 6 CD Stax/Craft/Universal
A distanza di parecchi anni dall’ultimo volume, parliamo ormai del 1994, torna assolutamente a sorpresa un nuovo capitolo della bellissima serie di cofanetti dedicati al catalogo dei singoli tratti dal materiale pubblicato su etichetta Stax/Volt e tutte le loro sussidiarie: uno dei compendi dedicati alla soul music, al r&b e alla musica nera in generale più esaltanti nella storia della musica. Giusto per rinfrescare la memoria, vi ricordo che i primi tre volumi sono usciti rispettivamente nel 1991, nel 1993 e, come detto, nel 1994, tutti in box formato grande tipo LP (ma in CD comunque) e poi ristampati varie volte nel corso degli anni, con formati e costi decisamente più ridotti. In effetti la parabola sembrava conclusa, visto che i tre box avevano coperto i tre periodi di vita della etichetta di Memphis, 1959-1968 nel primo volume, 1969-1971 nel secondo e 1972-1975 nel terzo, coprendo tutta la storia della Stax, dalle origini R&B, passando per il soul del periodo classico, fino al soul e funky degli anni ’70, attraverso una serie di canzoni, raccolte in modo certosino, che spaziavano dai maggiori successi fino ad una serie di chicche e rarità che poche se non nessun altra etichetta ha potuto pareggiare.
Quindi questo quarto volume arriva come una sorpresa totale, anche se fa parte dei festeggiamenti per il 60° Anniversario della etichetta di Jim Stewart, iniziati lo scorso anno (per esempio con il bellissimo box su Isaac Hayes), a 60 anni dalla nascita della etichetta come Satellite Records nel 1957 e poi diventata Stax nel 1961, dalla unione dei nomi dei due fondatori, oltre a Stewart anche la sorella Extelle Axton (STewart/AXton = Stax), entrambi bianchi ovviamente, come era tipico della storia di altre race label nate nel corso degli anni, e tuttora in vita alla rispettabile età di 87 anni (ma senza dimenticare Al Bell che invece era il produttore nero della label), come pure la sua etichetta, che è stata rilanciata nel 2006 dalla Universal, anche con una serie di nuove uscite. Il cofanetto è corredato come al solito da un esaustivo libretto, che vedete sopra, ricco di foto, informazioni e alcuni saggi dei curatori dell’opera: visto che una recensione track-by-track sarebbe ovviamente troppo lunga, vediamo almeno di segnalare le cose più interessanti e sfiziose contenute in ogni dischetto. I primi 3 CD come al solito sono prevalentemente dedicati al soul, al funky, con escursioni anche nel R&B e nel blues, i successivi 3 CD toccano anche generi che gli altri box avevano solo sfiorato, tipo gospel, country, rock e di nuovo blues, con materiale estratto anche da etichette associate alla Stax come Truth, Chalice, Enterprise, Hip e Ardent.
Il primo CD parte con Deep Down Inside di Carla & Rufus, lato B del primo singolo di Rufus Thomas, uscito nell’agosto ’60 per la Satellite e poi ci sono altri 7 brani di Thomas, da solo o con la figlia Carla, tra cui una deliziosa versione di Fine And Mellow di Billie Holiday, e altri lati B di singoli (ma che qualità) di altri artisti che testimoniano il passaggio dal R&B, dal doo wop, al blues e poi al soul, alcuni come All The Way di Prince Conley (qualche eco di Sam Cooke), Just Enough To Hurt Me degli Astors, I Found A Brand New Love di Eddie Kirk, assolutamente deliziosi. Tra le chicche anche il lato B di Green Onions di Booker T. & The Mg’s Fannie Mae, oppure Sassy di Floyd Newman, altro strumentale strepitoso, e siamo già al 1963. Dal 1964 arriva That’s The Way It Goes di Bobby Marchan (che annuncia la svolta di Sam & Dave, Wilson Pickett e Otis Redding, della cui Revue Marchan faceva parte); molti brani sono firmati da Steve Cropper, con i pezzi grossi della Stax, Shake Up dei Cobras, Watchdog di Dorothy Williams, Weak Spot di Ruby Johnson, ma c’è anche un pezzo di Sam & Dave A Small Portion Of Your Love, firmato da Porter/Hayes, meno esplosivo del solito, ma sempre di gran classe, e siamo arrivati al 1968, e ci sarebbero altri brani da citare, quasi tutti.
Il secondo CD parte con I’m So Glad You’re Back cantata da Shirley Walton, uscita ancora nel 1968, come pure il lato B dell’unico singolo di Delaney & Bonnie per la Stax, We’ve Just Been Feeling Bad, scritta da Steve Cropper ed Eddie Floyd, bellissimi pure i brani cantati da Judy Clay, uno da sola e due in duetto con William Bell. Il 1968 è un anno magico, e così troviamo anche Stay With Us degli Staples Singers, ancora un paio di brani di Booker T., mentre Consider Me di Eddie Floyd è del 1969, e la versione poderosa di I Thank You dei Bar-Kays, con i fiati che impazzano, del 1970. Tra le curiosità, una maturata Carla Thomas che fa Hi De Ho di Carole King e i Newcomers che fanno Mannish Boys di Muddy Waters in puro stile deep soul.
Il 3° CD che parte dal 1971 si apre con Ilana che canta una melodrammatica Let Love Fill Your Heart, prodotta da Van McCoy, gli ottimi Soul Children, per certi versi rivali dei Jackson 5 della Motown, se fossero stati fronteggiati da uno dei Temptations, David Porter e Isaac Hayes appaiono come cantanti in una melliflua versione di Baby I’m-A Want you dei Bread, che inaugura il futuro stile orchestrale di Hayes, che appare anche con Type Thang, un pezzo a tutto wah-wah che era anche nel secondo Shaft del 1972, come pure la bravissima e poco considerata Jean Knight alle prese con Pick Up The Pieces, il grande Johnnie Taylor con Stop Teasing Me un fantastico funky che sfida James Brown sul suo territorio, e ancora Major Lance che chiude il 1972 con una brillante Since I Lost My Baby’s Love.
Ribadisco che in teoria tutti questi brani erano “scarti”, destinati ai lati B o agli album, si potrebbe dire che hanno raschiato il fondo del barile, e un po’ così è stato, ma ascoltando la musica non si direbbe: per esempio una eccellente What’s Your Thing degli Staples Singers cantata alla grande da Mavis, ma anche una piacevolissima Yes Sir Brothers, entrambe pubblicate nel 1974, in quello che viene considerato il declino dell’epoca e l’ultimo brano del maggio 1975 Just Ain’t No Love di John Gary Williams che chiude la storia.
Che comunque riparte dal 1969, almeno nei contenuti, nel quarto CD, con il materiale della etichetta Enterprise: per iniziare una drammatica ballata orchestrale quasi da crooner, cantata da Sil Selvidge, The Ballad of Otis B. Watson, scritta e prodotta da Don Nix, Black Hands White Cotton dei Caboose (?), sembra un pezzo dei Creedence cantato da Elvis o da Johnny Rivers, con molti elementi gospel e rock, sempre in questo filone di country got soul commerciale troviamo anche Love’s Not Hard To Find di Dallas County, sempre con Don Nix alla guida; ci sono altri oscuri ma piacevoli cantanti dell’epoca che non citiamo, ma anche Billy Eckstine, grande cantante jazz e pop che incise tre album per la Enterprise, che è presente con I Wanna Be Your Baby, fin troppo arrangiata, diciamo non memorabile, come parte del contenuto di questo CD, anche la versione di Slip Away di O.B. McClinton non sfida gli originali, nonostante l’aria country grazie all’uso della pedal steel.
Meglio la versione di When Something Is Wrong With My Baby di nuovo di Eckstine, e ottima una tirata Some Other Man della River City Band, che sembra quasi un pezzo dei primi Chicago, con una chitarra pungente nell’arrangiamento, per non dire di Black Cat Moan, uno dei super classici di Don Nix (nel disco suonavano, tra i tanti, Barry Beckett, Claudia Lennear, David Hood, Eddie Hinton, Furry Lewis, Klaus Voorman, Pete Carr, Roger Hawkins), sia pure qui nella versione breve da 45 giri e fa capolino anche un tocco jazz e latin rock con Conquistadores ’74 del batterista Chicho Hamilton., quasi alla Santana.
Il quinto CD è dedicato alla Hip Records, una storia non di grande successo commerciale, 3 dozzine di singoli e quattro album in tutto, ma ci sono anche alcune perle del catalogo Ardent, quello dei Big Star di Alex Chilton per intenderci, che era stato tra gli originatori di questo filone “bianco/nero” con i suoi Box Tops: non per nulla questo dischetto è prodotto da Alec Palao, che ha scritto anche le note, grande esperto di garage e psych. A livello storico-collezionistico questo è forse il CD più interessante, ricco anche di materiale inedito, canzoni mai pubblicate, solo arrivate a noi sotto forma di demo, comunque molto curati a livello sonoro: si passa dal beat/garage dei Poor Little Kids, un pezzo delizioso come Stop – Quit It, tra Beau Brummels e il sound di Memphis.
Niente male anche Cigarettes di Lonnie Duvall, che ha una voce che mi ha ricordato il primo Mal, quello dei Primitives, molto british sound 1967, che è l’anno di uscita del singolo, e squisita anche It’s Mighty Clear di nuovo dei Poor Little Kids, con intricate armonie vocali, come pure Warm City Baby dei Jugs, con elementi alla Box Tops, che fanno pure una rallentata e psych For Your Love, e ancora le Goodees con For A Little Wheel, girl group misto a Motown del 1967 scritta da Hayes/Porter, ma c’è una canzone loro del 1969 Goodies di Dan Penn e Spooner Oldham.
Tutto il dischetto è una miniera di sorprese, da Groovy Day dei Kangaroo’s a And ILove You del futuro Derek & The Dominos Bobby Whitlock, che è soul fiatistico del 1968, scritto e prodotto da Don Nix e Duck Dunn, un paio di lati B di Billie Lee Riley, il vecchio rockabilly man degli anni ’50, convertito nel ’68-’69 in blue eyed soul alla Box Tops. Nell’ultima parte del CD ci sono alcuni pezzi dal catalogo Ardent, Feel Alright e I Love You Anyway dei Cargoe, grande power rock chitarristico con elementi degli Who, e tre brani dei Big Star, In The Street, Oh My Soul e la splendida September Gurls, piacevoli pure gli Hot Dogs con la loro versione rock/punk di I Walk The Line.
Il 6° e ultimo disco si tuffa nel gospel/soul delle etichette Chalice e Gospel Truth, con un brano di Roebuck “Pops” Staples Tryin’ Time che è un incantevole blues scritto da Donny Hathaway, uscito per la Stax nel 1970. Poi ci sono quattro brani dei formidabili Dixie Nightingales, molto bella Wade In The Water di The Stars Of Virginia prodotta dal grande Al Bell nel 1966, un paio di brani dei Jubilee Hummingbirds, uno dei bravissimi Pattersonaires, la splendida God’s Promise. Ci sono anche diversi brani cantati da Cori a me sconosciuti ma che mandano brividi lungo la schiena, oltre a quattro brani “divini” (scusate), in tutti i sensi, del mitico Rance Allen Group, usciti tra il 1972 e 1974, nonché due/tre vocalist femminili fantastiche, Terry Lynn e Louise McCord e Annette May Thomas di scuola Aretha gospel. Che altro dire? Globalmente una vera goduria, da non perdere, per appassionati, ma non solo!

.Agli inizi c’era anche la Volt, e poi sono arrivate tutte una serie di label associate, che sono tra la maggiori fonti del materiale che è stato raccolto in questo quarto volume e che va a pescare anche tra gospel, funky, country, rock e blues, attraverso varie canzoni pubblicate in origine come Truth, Chalice, Enterprise, Hip e Ardent, soprattutto negli ultimi anni di vita della Stax. Infatti, per la prima volta dopo il primo volume, è sparita la definizione Soul nel titolo di questa raccolta, che si chiama semplicemente Stax Singles Rarities, anche se i primi 3 CD dell’antologia trattano comunque quell’argomento, attraverso una sequenza di brani dove non è difficile trovare una ulteriore serie di piccole gemme, soprattutto lati B di singoli (Carla e Rufus Thomas, Booker T. & The MG’s, Sam And Dave, Judy Clay, Delaney & Bonnie, Staple Singers, Eddie Floyd, William Bell, Bar-Kays, Isaac Hayes, David Porter e una nutrita serie di sconosciuti, quanto eccellenti interpreti) destinati ad allietare le giornate degli appassionati del genere. E negli altri tre CD si trovano anche brani, tra i tanti, dei Big Star e Don Nix, che neri non erano di sicuro, anche se pure loro pescavano a piene mani dal soul e dal blues, oltre che dal rock.

Il cofanetto, corredato come al solito da un esaustivo libretto, esce il 9 febbraio sul mercato statunitense e poi sarà pubblicato anche il 2 marzo su quello europeo (e pure in Italia), evitando di dovere effettuare costosi acquisti oltreoceano dove le spese doganali sono sempre in agguato.
Non escludo all’uscita di tornarci sopra per un excursus più approfondito sui contenuti.
Ci eravamo lasciati con la prima parte di questa rubrica nella prima decade di gennaio, in cui promettevo che ci sarebbero state altre due puntate dedicate alle anticipazioni discografiche sulle uscite del mese. In seguito, come avrete notato, molti album in uscita hanno avuto, e avranno, dei Post specifici a loro dedicati; domani penso Eleanor Friedberger, nei prossimi giorni a seguire Ben Caplan, Tedeschi Trucks Band e altri. Ovviamente comunque non si riesce a recensire tutto, per cui questa rubrica rimane utile per tratteggiare e segnalare in breve le novità più importanti, cercando di tornare, ove possibile, su quelle più interessanti, sempre, più o meno, secondo i nostri gusti. Oggi tocca ad alcuni cofanetti in uscita in questo mese di gennaio.
Iniziamo con il box di 4 CD dedicato ai Long Ryders, titolo Final Wild Songs, etichetta Cherry Red Records, riporta la discografia completa della band di Sid Griffin e Stephen McCarthy, quindi tutti gli EP ed album originali, periodo storico anni 80, rimasterizzati ed arricchiti da bonus copiose, più un concerto inedito Live ‘T Beest, Goes, The Netherlands.

E anche i due cofanetti successivi, già ristampati, che completano la trilogia, sarebbero da avere. Meglio di quella di “Guerre Stellari”, la prima serie!
Se vi eravate persi le precedenti ristampe di questo Live At Max’s Kansas City dei Velvet Underground, compresa quella doppia uscita nel 2004, potreste approfittare di questa ennesima versione uscita di recente nel box multiplo di Re-Loaded della band di Lou Reed. In questa edizione con masterizzazione targata 2015 abbiamo 15 brani tratti dal famoso concerto dell’agosto 1970 che testimonia l’ultima apparizione di Lou con il gruppo, prima della reunion del 1993.

La band di Michael Nesmith, nata quasi per scherzo a seguito di un audizione per creare un gruppo creato a tavolino che doveva essere la risposta americana ai Beatles, in seguito, per certi versi, lo è stata davvero, lasciando una notevole quantità di belle canzoni e una serie di album che sentiti ancora oggi non hanno perso una briciola della freschezza che avevano ai tempi.
L’americana Rockbeat, che di solito si occupa della pubblicazione di dischi con concerti inediti, spesso di provenienza radiofonica, questa volta edita un doppio CD, Critic’s Choice 1947-1971, che attraverso le 46 canzoni contenute nei due dischetti ripercorre la carriera di Muddy Waters. Non credo che ci sia materiale inedito, comunque se non avete nulla, ad un rapido esame della tracklist riportata qui sopra, trovate tutti i grandi classici di McKinley Morganfield, tratti dal periodo passato alla Chess Records, anche se esistono già altre mille antologie.
Viceversa dei The Truth in CD esisteva poco o nulla, anzi di loro si erano perse le tracce e credo che il nome dica poco a quasi tutti. Si tratta della band formata da Dennis Greaves, il bravissimo cantante e chitarrista dei Nine Below Zero, dopo lo scioglimento della propria band nel 1982, e che pubblicò tre album in quegli anni (di cui gli ultimi due, fine anni ’80, con buon successo negli States, ma con un sound che virava pericolosamente verso un AOR tamarro come pochi), peraltro non compresi in questo cofanetto da 3 CD, che infatti giustamente si chiama A Step In The Right Direction Singles Demos BBC Sessions 1983-1984, e che vede Greaves affiancato dall’altro chitarrista Mick Lister, per una versione più leggera, tra R&B, soul e Mod dei NBZ, sulla scia dello scioglimento dei Jam di Paul Weller.

Come vedete moltissimo materiale inedito, tra cui un poderoso Live At The Marquee che quasi rivaleggia con quello della band originale di Greaves. Le note del libretto contenuto nel box sono firmate da Lois Wilson di Mojo, con la diretta collaborazione di Greaves e Lister.
Un’altra etichetta inglese, la RPM, pubblica questo triplo cofanetto, Looking Stateside, sottotitolato 80 US R&B Mod, Soul And Garage Nuggets, che raccoglie una serie di brani rari e oscuri, spesso inediti su CD, ancor di più di quelli contenuti nei famosi box di Nuggets. Quindi se amate garage, psych-rock, frat -rock, ma anche soul e R&B, qui c’è veramente trippa per gatti. Il cofanetto è il seguito di tre compilations, sempre di questa serie “Looking…”uscite negli scorsi anni, più orientare verso materiale di provenienza britannica. Alcuni gruppi sono anche “famosi” ( i Brogues erano quelli di I Ain’t No Miracle Worker, per noi italiani Sono Un Ragazzo Di Strada dei Corvi, i Champs quelli di Tequila, in Gotta Have A New Dress di Curtis Knight, c’è Jimi Hendrix alla chitarra, Timi Yuro era quella di Hurt, sempre per noi italici, A Chi di Fausto Leali) ma in questo caso si tratta di brani veramente sconosciuti anche per gli appassionati.
