Per farmi perdonare lo scherzoso, ma non gradito da qualcuno, Post sulle ristampe di Samantha Fox, vi segnalo un’altra serie di ristampe doppie Deluxe di un gruppo, OK un duo, che ha operato più o meno nello stesso periodo ma con ben altri risultati qualitativi.
La meritevolissma Edsel Records ristampa i primi 4 album degli Everything But The Girl, ovvero Tracey Thorn e Ben Watt: i dischi usciti per la Blanco Y Negro/Warner tra il 1984 e il 1988. I due, anche se sono rimasti nell’immaginario collettivo per il remix dance di Missing del 1994, erano nati come un duo autore di un folk-pop alternativo basato sulla ottima e particolare voce della Thorn (già nelle Marine Girls) e su quella più soffusa di Watt (che aveva pubblicato un North Marine Drive di stampo quasi Drakiano, Nick si intende, non quell’altro). E questi album, soprattutto il primo. Eden, sono ottimi esempi di quel pop sofisticato e vagamente jazzato che imperversava in Gran Bretagna nei primi anni ’80: Working Week, Sade, Style Council ( i nostri amici sono presenti in Café Bleu), e altri, con una certa quota folk e una giusta alternanza tra i due che erano anche buoni autori e lui anche un bravo chitarrista.
Oltre a tutto nei tanti singoli e mix che uscivano allora gli EBTG si cimentavano pure con cover spesso sorprendenti. Le ristampe vengono pubblicate tutte (sono già uscite, tra il 22 e il 29 maggio) con un secondo CD di inediti, rarità, BBC Sessions e materiale live e a un prezzo più che appetibile, come un singolo. Il sottoscritto poi non ha apprezzato la svolta dance-elettronica da metà anni ’90 in poi, anche se la voce di Tracey Thorn ha continuato a piacermi e Missing, il brano, era uscito in una versione “normale” nell’album del 1994 Amplified Heart, che era ancora un ottimo disco dove suonavano Dave Mattacks, Danny Thompson e Richard Thompson, tra gli altri, ma alla fine c’era quel Remix che cambiò tutto, ma questi quattro album raccontano la storia precedente.
