B.B. King – Ladies And Gentlemen…Mr. B.B. King 10 CD o 4 CD Universal 25-09-2012 *****

Ormai come sapete le ripubblicazioni e i Box Set si sprecano, ogni occasione è buona, anche l’anniversario scelto per questo cofanetto volendo è abbastanza risibile: il 50° anniversario dalla firma del contratto con l’ABC-Paramount, perché poi il primo album per l’etichetta, Mr. Blues uscirà nel 1963. Ma in questo caso il fatto è del tutto marginale, quello che conta è il contenuto strepitoso. 10 CD curati dal principe di queste edizioni, Bill Levenson, il più grande curatore, ingegnere e produttore per questo tipo di operazioni, per intenderci colui che ha realizzato i box di Derek And The Dominos Layla, degli Allman Brothers Dreams e di Peel Slowly And See dei Velvet Underground, per citarne alcuni, oltre alla serie Chronicle della Universal e decine di altri titoli, “pensionato” frettolosamente dalle case discografiche e ora tornato in pista alla grande per questo cofanetto.

Si tratta di 194 brani inseriti in ordine cronologico, dal 1949 al 2008, un vero paradiso per gli amanti del Blues e non solo, uno dei casi in cui vale assolutamente la pena di assegnare le 5 stellette per il capolavoro o al limite mezza stelletta in meno perché in tutto questo ben di Dio non c’è neppure un inedito (uno per la verità!), ma dovendo già scegliere tra una produzione immane i curatori hanno cercato quantomeno di inserire almeno un brano per ogni album pubblicato dal 1963 ai giorni nostri con qualche rarità, pescata soprattutto tra i duetti e nei dischi di altri artisti. Il tutto corredato da un bel libro di 72 pagine, ricco di foto e con le note firmate dal giornalista americano Ashley Kahn, specializzato in jazz e blues e da Dick Shurman, che per noi appassionati è semplicemente Magic Dick della J. Geils Band, una autorità nel campo.

Per la prima volta questo cofanetto è multi-label, ovvero c’è anche il materiale inciso per la Bullet, Modern/RPM e Kent/Crown tra il 1949 e il 1962, sparso nei primi due dischi, con 50 brani che illustrano la nascita del mito B.B. King quando Lucille non era ancora il nome della sua chitarra ma lui era già uno dei più grandi artefici dello strumento e tuttora risiede al n° 3 della classifica All Time della rivista Rolling Stone, dietro Hendrix e Duane Allman ma davanti al suo discepolo Clapton, e in risalita dal 6° posto della precedente edizione. Si parte con i primi brani editi nel 1949 su due singoli per l’etichetta Bullet e attraverso gli anni si toccano anche le collaborazioni con le orchestre di Count Basie e Duke Ellington, un brano a testa, le prime versioni di Sweet Little Angel e Rock Me Baby, veri capisaldi del suo repertorio, poi replicati varie volte negli anni a venire soprattutto in grandissime versioni dal vivo, ma in questo primo periodo ci sono tantissimi classici delle dodici battute del Blues, conosciuti anche nel repertorio di altri musicisti.

Dal terzo compact parte la disamina del repertorio più conosciuto, quello che attraverso la ABC, Impulse, Mca e Geffen, quindi tutti di quella che oggi si chiama Universal, ci porta ai giorni nostri. Gli anni ’60 sono quelli più importanti: il primo Mr. Blues (non conosciutissimo) è rappresentato da 6 brani, del grandissimo Live At The Regal del 1965 appaiono 5 brani e dell’altrettanto indispensabile Live And Well del 1969 ce ne sono quattro, oltre a moltissimi brani usciti in quegli anno solo in 45 giri e quindi rintracciabili solo in antologie varie. Di quel periodo è anche l’unico brano del cofanetto che riporta la fatidica scritta “previously unreleased” per una versione inedita di I Wonder Why del 1964 sul terzo CD. Sempre del 1969, a cavallo dei CD 4 e 5 ci sono 4 brani a testa tratti da Live And Well e Completely Well, fantastici.

Gli anni ’70 iniziano sul 5° compact con 5 brani estratti da uno dei suoi dischi più belli registrati in studio Indianola Mississippi Seeds per proseguire con 3 brani da Live At Cook County Jail e quattro da Live In Japan, entrambi del 1971, ma il secondo edito solo nel 1999. 3 tracce tratte dall’altrettanto indispensabile In London dal 1971 e una a testa dai due album registrati in collaborazione con il grande cantante Bobby “Blue” Bland li trovate sempre nel sesto CD. Tre brani da Midnight Believer il disco del 1978 registrato in collaborazione con i Crusaders aprono il settimo dischetto e da lì in avanti si trovano molti dei suoi duetti e collaborazioni, spesso rari: When Loves Come To Town con gli U2 del 1988, Right Place, Wrong Time con Bonnie Raitt dalla colonna sonora di Air America, Since I Met You Baby in coppia con Gary Moore, dal vivo al Town And Country nel ’93, uscito solo su un CD singolo. E nel disco 9 ce ne sono moltissimi: con Robert Cray, Etta James, Diane Schuur e con Marty Stuart e i Rolling Stones da Deuces Wild uno dei dischi migliori dell’ultimo periodo. L’ultimo disco ci porta nel nuovo secolo con due brani tratti dal disco registrato con Eric Clapton e poi ancora accoppiate fantastiche con Ray Charles e da 80, con Van Morrison e Elton John. Gli ultimi quattro brani sono tratti dall’eccellente One Kind Favor del 2008, quello prodotto da T-Bone Burnett, che potrebbe essere il suo ultimo e gli ha fruttato l’ennesimo Grammy.

In mezzo a tanti gioielli c’è anche un po’ di fuffa, per esempio il suono della batteria di Into The Night, peraltro tratto da una colonna sonora famosissima, non si può sentire, orrido, anche se lui canta benissimo e Lucille disegna le solite linee soliste inconfondibili, quando suona e canta Mr. Riley B. King, classe 1925 (87 anni il 16 settembre, tanti auguri), lo riconosci subito. E con questo cofanetto pantagruelico potete passare una intera giornata ad ascoltare alcune delle musiche migliori che sono state registrate in questi 63 anni. Si dice spesso, ma in questo caso è d’obbligo: Imperdibile!
