Mott The Hoople – Mental Train: The Island Years 1969-1971 – 6 CD – libretto di 50 pagine- Island/Universal 26-10-2018
In effetti questo sarebbe il secondo cofanetto annunciato per le uscite del prossimo autunno, visto che qualche giorno fa si è già parlato di John Lennon Imagine The Ultimate Collection, ma qui siamo in pieno periodo autunnale. Dopo lo splendido box del 2016 dedicato all’opera omnia solista di Ian Hunter https://discoclub.myblog.it/2016/11/12/ecco-piccolo-cofanetto-fatto-si-deve-ian-hunter-stranded-reality-parte-i/ , prosegue il doveroso lavoro di rivalutazione del lavoro del cantante inglese, con questa ristampa che copre il primo periodo della discografia dei Mott The Hoople, di cui era già uscito nel 1998 un triplo retrospettivo, edito dalla Columbia, che se intitolava All The Young Dudes The Anthology, che copriva anche il periodo Island, e che è quello che vedete qui sotto.
Non solo, come dimenticare anche l’edizione potenziata del Live del 1974, uscita nel 2004 come doppio CD, e le ristampe di tutti i singoli album del periodo Island a cura della Angel Air negli anni 2000, ciascuna con un paio di bonus tracks aggiunte alle edizioni originali, dischi bellissimi a mio parere. Per l’occasione la Universal ha affidato allo specialista Andy Pearce (quello che ha curato ottimamente anche gli album di Free, Taste e Rory Gallagher) la rimasterizzazione dei quattro dischi del periodo album, a cui sono stati aggiunti altri 2 CD, per un totale di 6 dischetti, ognuno ricco di materiale inedito e live, realizzato dalla formazione originale dell’epoca.

Per esempio, nel sesto CD. quello dal vivo alla Fairfield Hall, le bonus tracks aggiunte sono completamente diverse da quelle che si trovavano nella edizione Angel Air, che erano tratte da un concerto a Stoccolma del febbraio 1971, mentre in questo caso provengono da materiale BBC registrato a Londra nel dicembre 1971. Peraltro il materiale BBC, in modo più completo rispetto a quanto apparirà nel box era già uscito con il titolo di Original Mixed Up Kids, edito in Cd dalla Windsong nel 1996 e dalla Strange Fruit nel 1997. Così riferisce il vostro Blogger preferito, cioè il sottoscritto, che ha indagato per voi. In ogni caso rimane molto materiale inedito da gustare, e il prezzo del cofanetto, sempre a titolo indicativo, sarà tra i 50 e i 60 euro.
In anticipazione forse dell’uscita del box, la band ha anche fatto un breve tour europeo durante l’estate con una “strana” formazione dei Mott The Hoople, con qualche membro originale del gruppo.
