E in principio furono questi…
O meglio, in principio ci furono una serie di bootleg, uno in particolare, chiamato Great White Wonder, “uscito” nel 1969, che iniziò a svelare il contenuto di quella cornucopia di delizie che sarebbe stata nota come The Basement Tapes. Una serie di registrazioni, durate alcune mesi, avvenute nella cantina di una casa chiamata “Big Pink” a West Saugerties, sobborghi di Woodstock, New York, dove Bob Dylan, reduce dal suo misterioso incidente motociclistico, e Robbie Robertson, Rick Danko, Richard Manuel, Garth Hudson e, arrivato più tardi, Levon Helm, ovvero The Band, diedero alla luce (ma anche no) più di cento canzoni che avrebbero potuto cambiare ancora di più la storia della musica rock https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1lD-64YsRg0 . Purtroppo, a parte qualche brano, che riuscì a scappare, i più noti I Shall Be Released, The Mighty Quinn, This Wheel’s On Fire e You Ain’t Going Nowhere, il resto delle canzoni rimase cocciutamente negli archivi di Dylan e della casa discografica, fino al 1975, annoin cui venne pubblicato un doppio LP da parte della Columbia Records, con 16 brani di Dylan e 8 della Band, in rigoroso mono. Disco che fu un grande successo su entrambi i lati dell’oceano, entrando nei Top 10 sia negli Stati Uniti che nel Regno Unito.
Ripubblicato in CD in varie occasioni, l’ultima quella che vedete effigiata più sopra, nel 2009, sempre con 24 brani. Quando negli anni ’90 inizio ad uscire la Bootleg Series si pensò che uno dei primi dischi a subire il trattamento Deluxe sarebbe stato questo e invece abbiamo dovuto aspettare fino al capitolo 11, ma alla fine ci siamo, il 4 novembre usciranno The Basement Tapes Complete, 138 brani registrati in quella “mitica” estate del 1967, The Summer Of Love, raccolti in un cofanetto da 6 CD, che negli Stati Uniti è annunciato per la “modica” cifra di 150 dollari, oltre a due versioni, in 2 CD o 3 LP, definite Raw, che contengono 38 “highlights” estratti dal Box completo, con un libretto da 56 pagine ad illustrarne i brani contenuti. L’edizione Deluxe, con libro rilegato da 120 pagine, conterrà questi brani:

Non mi addentro ulteriormente nella disamina dei brani, in quanto so che, quando sarà il momento, nella vicinanza dell’uscita, l’amico Marco Verdi (ora impegnato in un trasloco, auguri o son cacchi tuoi, come preferisci!) saprà intrattenervi con dovizia di dettagli su questa importantissima uscita discografica.
Ma la storia non finisce qui. Infatti, lo stesso giorno, ma più probabilmente l’11 novembre, la Harvest/Universal pubblicherà questo Lost On The River – The New Basement Tapes che documenta, in due versioni, entrambe in singolo CD, ma una con 15 brani e l’altra Deluxe con 20 brani (MAH!?! Non capirò mai il perché), il risultato delle sessions tenute nel mese di marzo di quest’anno ai Capitol Studios di Hollywood da Elvis Costello, Rhiannon Giddens (Carolina Chocolate Drops), Taylor Goldsmith (Dawes), Jim James (My Morning Jacket) e Marcus Mumford (Mumford & Sons), sotto la produzione di T-Bone Burnett, al quale lo stesso Dylan aveva affidato i testi di due dozzine di brani “incompiuti”, che gli stessi artisti sopra citati hanno provveduto a completare ed incidere https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Iq66_lWB7I4 . Si dice che ne siano stati registrati anche altri, per cui potremmo aspettarci ulteriori capitoli di questa operazione meritoria, ma per il momento quelli che verranno pubblicati sono i seguenti:

In un brano, Kansas City, Johnny Depp ha sostituito Costello che si era dovuto assentare per la durata di una session. Il tutto è stato ripreso dal regista Sam Jones, per un documentario Lost Songs: The Basement Tapes Continued, che verrà trasmesso sul canale Showtime negli Stati Uniti il 21 novembre e poi, chissà, magari uscirà in DVD e Blu-Ray. Non dovrebbero esserci altri musicisti coinvolti, i partecipanti, che hanno registrato tutto in presa diretta, come nell’album originale, hanno provveduto a registrare anche la parte strumentale, scambiandosi ai vari strumenti nel corso delle diverse takes delle canzoni.
Ovviamente anche di questo, come del Dylan, se ne parlerà ancora a tempo debito.
