Oh Yes We Can Love: A History Of Glam Rock – 5 CD Universal -28/10/2013
Alcuni dei brani contenuti sono Glam come me e, come nel caso del Box della Rhino sulla Musica Gotica, A Live Less Lived, centrano come i cavoli a merenda (i Bauhaus sono in entrambe le compilations, per essere Glam basta fare un pezzo di David Bowie?), ma è proprio il bello di questi cofanetti, spesso è più interessante l’involucro del contenuto (però francamente Howlin’ Wolf glam, avete presente l’omone e la voce, per non parlare del genere?). E ci sono moltissimi altri esempi.
Per fortuna non costerà neppure moltissimo, sotto i 50 euro. Leggete la lista e giudicate da voi. Vi sembra manchi qualcosa? (Per esempio di Bowie solo una canzone e tra le tante proprio quella!).

Marc Bolan At The BBC – 6 CD – Universal 27-08 -2013
Se pensavate di aver comprato tutti i cofanetti possibili dedicati a Marc Bolan (e ai T.Rex), incluso un Bolan At The Beeb sempre pubblicato dalla Universal nel 2007, oltre alle Deluxe di The Slider ed Electric Warrior, ebbene vi sbagliavate perché a fine agosto uscirà quella che dovrebbe (condizionale d’obbligo) essere la compilation definitiva delle registrazioni effettuate da Bolan per l’emittente inglese nel periodo 1967-1977, compreso il materiale come John’s Children e Tyrannosaurus Rex. Naturalmente vale il principio che si ricompra sempre la stessa roba anche se ogni volta arricchita da nuove aggiunte, ma ormai il mercato delle ristampe funziona così. Almeno, per l’occasione, il cofanetto uscirà a prezzo speciale. Questi i contenuti:

Il grosso, naturalmente, riguarda il periodo 1968-73, degli anni dal 1974 al 1977 provengono solo una dozzina di brani, interviste comprese, ma il personaggio sicuramente merita questo trattamento, anche se fuori dai confini inglesi la sua fama non ha mai neanche lontanamente avvicinato quella del suo “rivale” David Bowie, pur essendo il talento di Bolan del tutto rispettabile. Una ulteriore buona occasione per scoprirlo.

Direi che in questo caso il sottotitolo del cofanetto dice tutto ed è un degno compagno del box quadruplo che era uscito all’incirca un annetto fa, nell’estate del 2012, I Lost My Head, The Chrysalis Years 1975-1980. Indirizzato soprattutto ai fans, anche se già nel 2004 era uscita una compilation intitolata Scraping The Barrel, che però evidentemente non aveva “raschiato il fondo” ed in ogni caso toccava periodi diversi della loro produzione!
Solita lista dei contenuti, ma direi che per gli amanti di uno migliori e più misconosciuti gruppi degli anni ’70 (e oltre), strepitosi a livello musicale, questa è una occasione d’oro per ampliare la (nostra) collezione: mi inserisco anch’io. Il tutto a prezzo super speciale, com’è consuetudine di questa serie di ristampe.

Nell’imminenza dell’uscita, quando ci saranno ulteriori informazioni, anche sulla presenza di ulteriori edizioni meno costose, sarà mia cura tenervi informati: in contemporanea, sempre per la serie delle ristampe di Mike Oldfield dovrebbe uscire anche una edizione 2 CD+DVD di Five Miles Out.
Per i cofanetti dovrebbe essere tutto, diciamo per il momento.
Ultima lista di uscite discografiche per il mese di Aprile (forse), alcune in uscita oggi 24 aprile altre già disponibili.
Partiamo con il “nuovo” gruppo del momento, perché sapete che quasi ogni settimana ce n’è uno: questi Of Monsters And Men di cui è uscito il 3 aprile (ma non in Italia, dove uscirà il 15 maggio) l’album di debutto, questo My Head Is An Animal, sono una band islandese, ebbene sì, ma non c’entrano nulla con Sugarcubes o Sigur Ror, sono sotto contratto per la Universal Republic e lo scorso anno avevano pubblicato un EP. Al momento sono molto popolari in America dove hanno riscosso un significativo successo al South by Southwest ma anche le riviste specializzate inglesi ne hanno parlato bene e pure in Italia qualcosa si muove (lo sto ascoltando in questi giorni e conto di approfondire nei prossimi giorni). Per il momento diciamo che sono una formazione dove le voci di Nanna Bryndis Hilmarsdottir e Ragnar Porhalsson, quindi una femminile e una maschile, ben si amalgamano in uno stile che è stato paragonato a quello di Arcade Fire, Decemberists, Great Lake Swimmers, Death Cab For Cutie, Mumford and Sons, il filone del cosiddetto “nuovo folk-rock”, vogliamo dire retromani, così facciamo contenti i fans di Simon Reynolds (che mi ricorda un po’ il Catalano dei tempi di Arbore, viste le cose ovvie che dice).
Il pianista e sideman Jon Cleary contrariamente a quanto pensano tutti non è di New Orleans ma è originario del Kent in Inghilterra, comunque la musica della Crescent City è il suo pane quotidiano. Questo Occapella, edito la scorsa settimana dalla Fhq Records, lo vede alle prese con il repertorio di Allen Toussaint, con l’aiuto di Dr.John e della sua frequente datrice di lavoro Bonnie Raitt, entrambi presenti in questo CD. Per chi ama il funky-soul-R&B di New Orleans e il piano.
Doug Paisley è un eccellente cantautore canadese autore di due ottimi album tra cui Constant Companion di cui mi sono occupato per il Blog nell’Ottobre 2010, se volete verificare, temp-3507313775689154ecbe16f0fb3900d1.html. Questo Golden Embers è un mini album con 5 brani che conferma quanto di buono si era detto su di lui. Etichetta No Quarter.
Tre ristampe interessanti.
La Emi inglese prosegue con la sua meritoria serie di cofanetti quintupli a special price dedicati ai nomi di “culto” che hanno fatto parte del proprio catalogo: Kevin Ayers The Harvest Years 1969-1974 raccoglie i cinque album incisi dall’ex Soft Machine per l’etichetta inglese, nelle versioni rimasterizzate e potenziate uscite qualche anno fa. Se non li avevate già acquistati si tratta di alcuni tra i migliori dischi della musica britannica di quel periodo: Joy Of A Toy, Shooting At The Moon (May I è uno dei brani più eleganti degli anni ’70) , Whatevershebringswesing, Bananamour e The Confessions of Dr.Dream che sono sicuro ai tempi (1974) era della Island, ma comunque è un bel disco e ci sta bene in questa antologia.
Dei T.Rex vi avevo già annunciato da mesi l’uscita di questo Electric Warrior, anche in versione SuperDeluxe oltre a quella canonica doppia distribuita dalla Universal. La settimana prossima riescono a special price anche tutti gli altri album della Band.
Jerry Jeff Walker rimarrà perennemente nella memoria degli appassionati per avere scritto Mr. Bojangles ma nel corso degli anni ha pubblicato anche un consistente (direi una quarantina) numero di album: questa ristampa doppia dell’australiana Raven raccoglie Walker’s Collectibles del 1974 e Ridin’ High del 1975, due tra i migliori, con sei tracce bonus + un raro singolo. Eccellente qualità sonora (anche il prezzo, purtroppo) e confezione molto curata come di consueti.
Oli Brown, come già ricordato nel Post dedicato a Danny Bryant, fa parte di quella ondata di giovani bluesmen (Matt Schofield, Simon McBride, Ainsley Lister ed altri) che allietano le giornate degli appassionati del rock-blues britannico. Brown, poco più che ventenne, è il più giovane,ma con questo Here I Am è già al suo terzo album per la Ruf Records e conferma quanto di buono avevo scritto su di lui per il Buscadero.
Kip Moore è l’ultimo di una serie di cantanti che dai tempi di Springsteen fonde blue-collar rock e country (vogliamo dire Heartland Rock?). Questo Up All Night che esce in questi giorni per la MCA Nashville ne è un ulteriore esempio. Si aggiunge ad una lista di epigoni springsteeniani da Joe Eddie a Joe D’Urso passando per i molto più dotati Michael McDermott e Will T. Massey. Qui c’è più country ma non è malaccio.
Questo titolo non è pubblicato dalla Left Field Media ma il principio è sempre quello: prendere dei broadcast radiofonici classici e renderli disponibili in questi Live semiufficiali. Cowboy Angels di Emmylou Harris è l’ultimo della serie: con la Hot Band alla Boarding House di San Francisco questo è il periodo d’oro di Emmylou. Tre album che girano tra Blues, roots, country-rock, southern e Americana.
The 44’s, nonostante il titolo del CD, Americana, fanno del blues-rock, con Kid Ramos che suona e produce, fondono i vecchi Canned Heat, Roomful Of Blues e Fabulous Thunderbirds, anche qualcosa dei primi Blasters. Etichetta Rip Cat Records, è il secondo album che fanno (ho come l’impressione che mi capiteranno tra le mani per il giornale)!
I Waco Brothers sono il side group di Jon Langford dei Mekons quando vuole fare del country-punk di qualità, incidono per l’etichetta Bloodshot, da cui il titolo Great Chicago Fire e questa volta è della partita anche l’ottimo Paul Burch dei Wpa Ballclub (ma ha suonato anche con Lambchop, Mark Knopfler, Vic Chesnutt, Exene Cervenka).
Cadenza biennale per gli album della Josh Abbott Band: questo Small Town Family Dreams è il terzo disco per il gruppo texano che fonde Red Dirt, Country e southern rock con ottimi risultati. Già il nome dell’etichetta è tutto un programma, Pretty Damn Tough Records.
Seconda puntata delle novità a prossima, futura memoria. Intanto, come vedete, finalmente escono le versioni “normali” di The Return Of The Spectacular Spinning Songbook in occasione della ripresa del tour dallo stesso nome di Elvis Costello. Quindi potete scegliere, o solo il CD o solo il DVD oppure il CD+DVD, l’unica cosa controversa è la data di uscita: secondo la Universal europea dovrebbe uscire il 13 marzo mentre in America dicono che la data sarà il 3 Aprile. Chi avrà ragione? Vedremo tra qualche settimana.
Stesso problema di date anche per il nuovo Lionel Richie. In Europa è sempre il 13 marzo mentre negli States è dato per il 27 marzo. In entrambi i casi Mercury Nashville tramite la Universal. Perché ne parlo? Si tratta di un disco di duetti country! Ebbene sì Lionel Goes Country, il titolo Tuskegee fa riferimento alla città natale di Richie che si trova in Alabama quindi una zona dove si mangia pane e country. I brani sono tutte riprese delle canzoni più famose di Richie sotto forma di duetto, ovvero…

Il 10 aprile per la sua nuova etichetta Redwing Records negli Stati Uniti e il 3 aprile con la Proper Records (scatenata nel mettere sotto contratto grandi artisti) esce il nuovo album di Bonnie Raitt Slipstream. 4 brani prodotti da Joe Henry e il resto autoprodotto dalla stessa Raitt è il primo album di studio da 7 anni a questa parte. Ci sono due cover di Dylan e altri brani celebri e non (direi più non), comunque questa è la lista con relativi autori:

Non so ancora i nomi dei musicisti, ma ci sarà tempo per gli aggiornamenti del caso.
Del Live di Janis Joplin con i Big Brother And The Holding Co. sono stato uno dei primi a parlarne il 7 gennaio big%20brother%20and%20the%20holding%20company quando non aveva ancora una copertina ma già una data, il 13 marzo, che è stata confermata. Nel frattempo è stata confermata, sempre per la Sony Legacy, anche l’uscita il 17 aprile delle Pearl Sessions. Quindi nel 1970 per il 40° anniversario della morte nessuna uscita discografica ma si commemora il 42°, ormai le case discografiche sono così.
Prosegue la serie dei Bootleg di Johnny Cash con il Vol. IV che non segue particolari progetti cronologici. Il prossimo della serie The Soul Of Truth è in uscita, sempre il 3 aprile, per la Sony Legacy e sarà dedicato alla musica gospel. Tra le 51 tracce dei 2 CD tre album rari o inediti nella loro interezza: A Believer Sings The Truth del 1979, quello del 1975 e Johnny Cash Gospel Singer, in totale ci sono 15 brani che dovrebbero essere completamente inediti.
La Esoteric ha trovato questo rarissimo Disco Jets di Todd Rundgren & Utopia, pubblicato solo in Giappone nel 1976 dove Todd & Company rivisitano in versioni strumentali, ricche di assoli, molti temi che erano legati a quell’anno. Quindi il Bi-Centenario degli Stati Uniti, la fantascienza con Star Trek, la Disco Music, questi i 10 brani presenti, il CD verrà pubblicato il 27 marzo:
